"A citation analysis of undergraduate term papers in microeconomics revealed a significant decrease in the frequency of scholarly resources cited between 1996 and 1999. Book citations decreased from 30% to 19%, newspaper citations increased from 7% to 19%, and Web citations increased from 9% to 21%. Web citations checked in 2000 revealed that only 18% of URLs cited in 1996 led to the correct Internet document. For 1999 bibliographies, only 55% of URLs led to the correct document. The authors recommend 1) setting stricter guidelines for acceptable citations in course assignments; 2) creating and maintaining scholarly portals for authoritative Web sites with a commitment to long term access; and 3) continuing to instruct students how to critically evaluate resources."

"Cronin examines the implications of the extraordinary growth in the number of authors of single papers in the biomedical and high energy physics domains. Such practices call into question the assumption that the author(s) bear sole responsibility and deserve sole credit for the work. While collaboration and multiple authorship certainly existed before the 20th century, the advent of big science has stimulated it. Papers with 100 authors increased from one in 1981 to 182 in 1994. Increasing collaboration and the highly technical nature of modern research mean coauthorship is inescapable, but honorific, guest and gift authorship are not currently uncommon and major contributors are at times excluded. Generally accepted guidelines for authorship do not exist. The difficulty of fixing the degree of an individual's contribution is not trivial and the standard model of authorship is in need of revision with likely variations in different genera."

"The idea of a unified citation index to the literature of science was first outlined by Eugene Garfield [1] in 1955 in the journal Science. Science Citation Index has since established itself as the gold standard for scientific information retrieval. It has also become the database of choice for citation analysts and evaluative bibliometricians worldwide. As scientific publication moves to the web, and novel approaches to scholarly communication and peer review establish themselves, new methods of citation and link analysis will emerge to capture often liminal expressions of peer esteem, influence and approbation. The web thus affords bibliometricians rich opportunities to apply and adapt their techniques to new contexts and content: the age of ‘bibliometric spectroscopy’ [2] is dawning."

"Forty-five web sites from Science- Engineering Libraries of universities in the USA and Canada are analyzed according their design characteristics and hypertext links. The most common elements are then incorporated into a model home page that visually shows the predominant design characteristics and hypertext links on this type of web site. The results show that in general the current design of home pages for Science-Engineering Libraries contain many of the elements found in home pages of academic libraries. Among the characteristics found are images, screen lengths, colors, number and types of links, and link headings. The content of these web sites is also analyzed and summarized."

"Lawrence and Giles proposed two different methods for estimating the number of Web pages, the first one used search engines as a random sampling method and the second one used random sampling of Internet Protocol (IP) addresses and Web servers. These two methods were applied to Japanese Web pages in the JP domain, obtaining an estimate of 88 million (first method) and 17 million (second method) pages for the size of the Japanese indexable Web. These results mean that these methods do not measure exactly the same Web pages. They also suggest that Japanese search engines cover only a part of Japanese indexable Web pages, and that the Web pages in the JP domain are less connected compared with the whole Web."
